Dirty secret

i know this is about board games but i have a dirty secret...

i LOVE to watch people play video games. this is because i am totally uncoordinated and hate having to bother to remember how to work the controller thing. also, the controller thing tends to make me get immediate repetitive strain injury. it might also have something to do with being a horrid back seat driver. i get to be totally bossy and all like "omg! i can't believe you didn't go right you FOOL! NO! your _other_ right!"

that's my confession. I got Vim a Wii for his birthday and have been ever since forcing him to play Zelda while i watch.

Catan mods

We have short attention spans over here but if inspired we can get super focused and geeky. last summer we must have been pretty bored because we and our neighbors played A LOT of Settlers. so much so that the regular settlers game began to pall and we took to heavy drink, yelling at each other and making up shit.

here is some evidence:

First thing our neighbor did was make a shoe for the cards. if you're sloppy drunk dealing with 6 piles of cards can be a bitch. then my husband, who is pictured above, made a dice roller. i think that stemmed from a  conversation about the genius of the "Life" pop dice roller thingy, know what i am talking about?
anyway, i will take a picture of it and post later.

we also altered two of the soldier cards. one is called "bad santa" (don't ask), this card is -1 point. it totally sucks.
the other card is a +1 if you do not have longest road or largest army and -1 if you do.

our other mod, and i love this, is that we deal the board out upsidedown and have to place our pieces on this upside down board. it just makes it totally random and utterly sucky sometimes.

I was really intrigued at first, but then I remembered that the entire point of board games is twofold:

1) Geeky pleasure with friends over a gameboard.

2) Tactile bits.

3) Trash-talking and tactics take on a more fun tone face-to-face rather than over the internets.

Color me "curmudgeonly old coot".
